Background

Technology advances may have an impact on the way the spectrum is managed. This may for example include the advent of new applications and new radio network features, e.g. super-low network latency provisions, mission critical application support, much higher radio network capacities, high degree of flexibility to organise networks (e.g. ‘slicing’), new tools enabling the sharing of spectrum.

To identify relevant issues and which of them fall within the remit of ECC, the workshop should discuss sectoral market needs and their main related issues in this context. The focus lies on spectrum solutions as well as the challenges with the above disruptive technologies and services.

Sectors to be addressed include transportation, M2M/IoT, industrial automation, PPDR, smart homes, smart grids, healthcare and media/entertainment.

The aim of the workshop is to attempt to predict identifiable spectrum requirements to fulfil upcoming communications needs of industry sectors.

The event will be staged over four sessions within the two days of the event:

Session 1 – Identify the future demands of industry sectors - hosted by Michael Sharpe  (Director Spectrum and Equipment Regulation, ETSI). The aim is for several sectors to set out their view of communications requirements.

Session 2 – Identify the spectrum opportunities available under present regulatory regimes (focussing on 5GNR/ mmWave / 60 GHz) and looking ahead to alternative regimes where enhanced equipment techniques such as Network Slicing / Cognitive sharing and access protocols allow for de-segmentation of spectrum.  A session hosted by Thomas Weilacher (WGFM Chair)

Session 3 – The view of administrations – hosted by Steve Green (ECC PT1 Chair)

Session 4 – Follow-up actions - hosted by Chris Woolford (ECC Chair)
